The Sort of Vineyard That’s Easy to Like

Stopham Vineyard, Stopham Pulborough,West Sussex, RH20 1EE

Let's head to West Sussex, wandering into Stopham Vineyard — a peaceful corner of the South Downs where even the hedgerows look like they’re having a nice time.

Stopham was planted in 2007 by Simon Woodhead, who came from Formula 1. Yes — actual F1. One minute you’re engineering race cars, the next you’re quietly coaxing Pinot Gris. Life choices,

honestly… inspiring.

The vineyard sits on sandy, south-facing slopes, which is basically the viticulture equivalent of prime theatre seats. Sunshine, great drainage, lovely views — pretty ideal working conditions if you’re a grape. Some roots even reach six metres deep, which feels like overachieving but we respect the commitment.

Stopham specialises in aromatic still whites: Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Bacchus — grapes that naturally want to burst into song. Expect those bright, expressive notes: pear, peach, grapefruit, orange peel… the whole fruit bowl doing a gentle warm-up.

Their winery is a converted barn filled with stainless steel and quietly clever tech. Nothing flashy, nothing attention-seeking — just the kind of setup that looks like it knows exactly what it’s doing.

Everything here has this calm, thoughtful energy. If you enjoy wines that are fresh, clean, and quietly confident, Stopham is a vineyard you’ll appreciate knowing about.

That’s Stopham Vineyard — Sussex scenery, thoughtful winemaking, and plenty to explore.
